Pet Licensing Info

Every cat or dog that is owned, resides within the Incorporated City Limits of South Bend at least 6 months out of the year and is at 6 months or older, is required to have a City Pet License issued by South Bend Animal Resource Center. This does not apply to free roaming or community cats.


What are the city's pet licensing fees?

Altered Pet Licensing Fees    
1         pet - $15 Annually  
   

2 - 4     pets - $25 Annually

    

5 - 8     pets - $50 Annually

    

9 - 12    pets - $100 Annually

Unaltered Pet Licensing Fees

1 unaltered pet         $50 Annually

2-3 unaltered pets    $300 Annually

    
     
  • All cats and dogs over six (6) months of age in South Bend must be licensed.
  • New residential license is to be issued for a term of one (1) year, commencing with the date of issuance.
  • If you add to your four-legged family at any point, that animal must be added to your license. If it bumps you up to the next fee bracket, you will be asked to pay the difference.
  • Pet Licensing is no longer “Breed Specific.” Pit Bulls are no longer required to have special permits.


Where can I obtain a license for my pet?

Citizens can obtain a city license for their animals in person at South Bend Animal Resource Center located at 521 Eclipse Place, South Bend, IN 46628

They will need to bring a copy of their pets CURRENT rabies vaccination certificate.  

Citizens can also obtain a license through the mail by mailing a copy of their CURRENT rabies certificate, payment and License Application Form to SBARC 521 Eclipse Place, South Bend, IN 46628.


Who needs to obtain a license for their pet?

Any person owning, keeping, harboring, or having custody of any dog or cat over the age of six (6) months must obtain a pet license.”

Senior citizens over the age of 62 must register their pets, however, the fee will be waived.

Some service animals may be exempt from fees with appropriate documentation. This does not include emotional support animals.


How often do I need to renew my pet's license?

Annually


What is an altered pet?

An altered cat or dog is one that has been spayed or neutered, making them incapable of producing offspring.
