Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Checks


This article provides information on Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) checks which are required by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles when a vehicle is purchased outside the state of Indiana.



Where do VIN checks occur?

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) checks can be done:

  • In-person at the South Bend Police Department
    • 701 W. Sample Street, South Bend, IN
  • Offsite at your location by a Police Officer
    • Call non-emergency number 574-235-9201


When can I get a VIN check?

  • In-person VIN checks can be done at the South Bend Police Department during daylight hours only.
    • Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
    • Observed City Holidays (see list here) 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
      • Closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day
         
  • Offsite VIN checks can be done offsite by a Police Officer during daylight hours only.


What do I need to get a VIN check?

In-person VIN check:

  • Must have 4-digit South Bend address, and
  • Vehicle must be present at the police station

Offsite VIN check:

  • Fee paid at the South Bend Police Department in advance, and
  • Receipt must be shown to officer when arriving to check VIN, and
    • No receipt, the officer will not proceed
  • Must have 4-digit South Bend address, and
  • Vehicle must be present when officer arrives to the offsite location


How much do VIN checks cost?

  • Cost: $5
  • Fee must be paid in advance and receipt in hand prior to VIN check
  • Payment can only be made at the South Bend Police Department
