Organic Resources


The City produces compost and mulch from yard waste collected from residents and businesses. Items such as grass clippings, leaves, weeds and branches are converted into compost and mulch at Organic Resources, located at 4340 Trade Drive. Compost and mulch are available to residents for free, self-loading, or can be loaded for a fee.

Organic Resources is located at 4340 Trade Drive in South Bend. Hours are:

Monday through Friday (February 5 through March 29)
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Note: Loading and dumping ends at 3:45 p.m.)      

Monday through Friday (April 1 through December 31)
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Note: Loading is only available until 3:45 p.m. Dumping ends at 4:45 p.m.)      

Saturday (Open Saturdays from April 1 through October 1)
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Note: Dumping ends at 12:45 p.m.)

Note: Organic Resources is open throughout the year except on City observed holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, day after Thanksgiving and Christmas.



Who can use Organic Resources?

Organic Resources is open to residents and businesses in the South Bend-area for both drop-off and pickup of material. Fees may vary for residents in and outside South Bend city limits.


What kind of materials can I drop off? Is there a fee?

Residents and businesses can drop off yard waste at the facility for a nominal fee. The cost of disposing yard waste is $3.65 per cubic yard for residents within South Bend city limits. For customers outside South Bend city limits (including five-digit South Bend addresses), the fee is $11 per cubic yard. Residential customers will need to show their driver’s license for proof of address. If the address on your driver’s license doesn’t match your South Bend address, in this instance a South Bend Municipal Utilities bill with your name and a city address will be accepted. Commercial customers will be asked for the address of their business.

Only organic material such as grass clippings and leaves are accepted at Organic Resources. These items are processed into compost and mulch, which are made available to city residents.

Below is a list of items that Organic Resources does and does NOT accept:

ACCEPTS
Branches, brush, garden and grass clippings, leaves, logs, and wood chips.

DOES NOT ACCEPT
Concrete, process wood, rocks, sand, stumps/stump grindings and trash of any kind.


Who can drop off yard waste?

Residential customers will need to show their driver’s license for proof of address. Commercial customers will be asked for the address of their business.


Organic Resources has compost and mulch. Is there a fee for loading?

Compost and mulch are available free of charge, if self-loading, or for a fee if assistance is needed. Those self-loading must bring their own shovels and containers to collect the material. To get compost and mulch after business hours, use the self-loading area outside the fence of the facility.

Loading of compost and mulch is available to any South Bend city resident for the following rates:

  • Up to four yards at a time: $5 per cubic yard + tax
  • More than four yards: $9 per cubic yard for all yards, including the first four + tax

Loading is only available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. [Note: Loading ends an hour before the facility closes]. There is no loading available on Saturdays.

Organic Resources accepts cash (nothing larger than $20 bills), Visa, Mastercard and Discover. Organic Resources does not accept American Express.


Are compost and mulch available year-round?

Compost is available March through November. Mulch is available April through October. However, due to high demand, compost and mulch may not be available at certain times.
